First king tides of the year expected next week

Date published: 8 January 2021

Townsville City Council is urging residents in low-lying areas to prepare their properties ahead of the first expected king tide of the year.

The king tides are expected on Tuesday and Wednesday (12 and 13 January) and will reach a peak of 3.84m at 9:26am on Wednesday.

There is a possibility that these tides may be higher than expected due to the rainfall experienced over the past few weeks.

Residents living in or visiting areas that may be affected – such as South Townsville, Railway Estate, Hanran Street and Ogden Street – should observe all warning and road closures.

Residents should also move any valuable and cars that could be impacted by salt-water flooding if they are concerned.

Anyone driving through impacted areas should remain vigilant around flooded roads – if it’s flooded, forget it.
