Turtle Friendly Lighting Trial

Townsville City Council is undertaking an innovative lighting trial using a mobile light tower fitted with amber lights. The lights will help maintain a safe lighting in the area and help turtle hatchlings find their way to the sea without distraction from the existing bright artificial lighting within the Saunders Beach rest area.

Council plans to start this lighting trial on Friday, 31 January continuing until the end of the turtle hatching season, which concludes around end of February or early March 2025.

If you live in or are travelling through the area, you may experience:

  • Low-level noise generated by the mobile light tower when in operations
  • Temporary security fencing installed around the lighting tower
  • Reduced light levels within the rest area.

Works will include:

  • Existing artificial pole-mounted lights in the rest area will be turned off
  • Amber wildlife-friendly light towers will be installed to replace the existing lights, which will be secured by temporary fencing.
