Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO)
Audits have indicated approximately 46% of the kerbside bin content from households is food and garden waste. Organic material sent to landfill not only represents a wasted resource, but it also contributes to the production of harmful greenhouse gases.
Townsville City Council has identified the need to implement initiatives to divert organic material from landfill that builds on our goal of “A circular economy that advances businesses and moves towards zero waste”.
In line with the actions documented within the NQ Waste Reduction and Recycling Plan, Townsville City Council, in conjunction with NQROC has developed an Organics Roadmap. The Roadmap assesses the merits of introducing a household kerbside organics solution.
The Roadmap recommends Council undertake a trial to gather data and lessons learned. This data will inform the potential city-wide delivery of a domestic FOGO service. Council is currently considering this and other recommendations within the Roadmap and will update this page as new developments arise.
