Project Updates
FAQs
What is the project scope?
The safety upgrade works involve:
- installing fencing surrounding each lagoon
- installing purpose-built lifeguard towers at key vantage points around the lagoons.
Why is the project needed?
The safety upgrades address recommendations by Royal Life Saving Queensland and will enhance the safety of all lagoon users by:
- segregating the swimming areas from the remainder of the precinct, to prevent children from wandering into the lagoon
- providing enhanced visibility through purpose-built lifeguard towers installed at key vantage points around the lagoons, enabling lifesavers to have a better view of the area.
What is the project timeframe?
- Stage 1: Lower lagoon
- Works commence Monday 9 October 2023.
- Works conclude in early December 2023, reopening in time for the December school holidays.
- The upper lagoon, change rooms and toilets will remain open during the works.
- Stage 2: Upper lagoon
- Works will commence in late January 2024, after Australia Day, to not impede school holiday use.
- Works will conclude in late March 2024, in time to reopen for the Easter school holidays.
How will I be impacted?
The works will be conducted in stages and will require partial closure of the lagoons during the works, with change rooms and toilets remaining open as usual during the works.
The lower lagoon will be closed from 9 October 2023 to early December (reopening in time for the December school holidays). The upper lagoon will be closed from late January 2024, reopening in time for the Easter school holidays.
How will the community benefit?
The works will provide enhanced safety for lagoon users and all visitors to the Riverway precinct, as swimming areas will be safely fenced off from the remainder of the precinct, preventing children from wandering into the lagoon, and lifeguards will be able to monitor the swimming areas from optimal vantage points.
The design of the new fencing will align aesthetically with the rest of the Riverway Precinct and new signage will be designed and installed as part of the project. This signage will provide the community with precinct information, depth markers and safety messaging, behavioural expectations, plus QR codes for Lifeguard information.
Digital signage will be installed near the upper lagoon with rolling safety messaging and precinct information.
How much will it cost?
Council is investing $1.2 million into this important safety project.
