Slope Remediation
Following recent pre-wet and post-wet season inspections of Townsville inner city slope stability, Townsville City Council plans to undertake rockfall protection and slope stabilisation remedial works along the Stanley Street cutting and Castle Hill Road.
This project is part of Council's ongoing management of the heritage reserve and an outcome of our Castle Hill Reserve Emergency Management Plan (CHREMP).
The CHREMP describes the processes and controls designed to ensure Council's compliance with its statutory obligations and to mitigate the risk of identified hazards to people, property, and the natural environment.
Council is preparing to commence works on Stanley Street on Friday 8 August 2025. This will involve closure of the road at the Stanley Street cutting.
The Castle Hill Road works are expected to commence at the end of September 2025
As part of these works, Council will:
- remove unstable portions of the slope
- shape the remaining slope to a consistent grade
- install rock dowels, soil nails and rockfall mesh
- apply shotcrete as required.
If you live in or are travelling through the area, you may experience:
- construction machinery and vehicle movement
- increased levels of dust, noise, and vibrations
- temporary traffic changes, including lane and road closures, minor traffic delays and reduced speed limits.
We will continue to update the community as the planning of these works progress.
This project is funded by Townsville City Council.
