Water Main Upgrades

Townsville City Council is progressing with the underground water main and pathway upgrades near the intersection of Gregory and Mitchell Street in North Ward.

The intersection near Vitti Café will be temporarily closed to traffic while pavers are being removed, and new stormwater grates installed. Council assures businesses that access will remain open to the public throughout these works.

We are entering the final stages of the upgrades and night works will take place in the area over the coming weeks. We estimate a practical completion date of Monday 17 November 2025.

Scheduled works will continue throughout the working week, with limited activity occurring over the weekend depending on weather and project conditions.

In addition, night works are planned on the following dates:

  • Wednesday 5 November
  • Thursday 6 November
  • Friday 7 November.

As part of the works Council will:

  • remove existing pavers
  • set-up form work for concrete pours
  • pour concrete
  • install stormwater grates
  • apply sealer.

If you work in, reside in, or are travelling through the area, you may experience:

  • construction machinery and vehicle movement
  • increased levels of dust, noise, vibrations and flashing lights
  • temporary traffic changes, including lane closures, minor traffic delays and reduced speed limits
  • temporary loss of on-street parking and disruption to the outdoor dining areas.

Normal work hours are from 6am for day works and 5pm for night works.

Due to the nature of these works, traffic detours will be in place. Motorists should follow all traffic control directions and detours.
