Environmental Restoration

Council is continuing restoration and improvement works within the Abbott Street Saltmarsh, Oonoonba. These efforts aim to mitigate the impact of human activities that compromise the saltmarsh’s ability to function as a healthy ecosystem and a valuable natural
asset within our urban environment.

As part of this commitment and the broader project delivery, Council is installing rock boulders and repairing or installing fencing at
designated access points to prevent unauthorised entry into the saltmarsh.

Works will include:

  • implementing vehicle exclusion barriers using natural rock boulders
  • repairing and/or installing new rail fencing

If you live in or are travelling through the area, you may experience:

  • construction machinery and vehicle movement
  • increased levels of dust, noise, vibrations and occasional odour
  • stockpiling of rock boulders
  • temporary pathway closures, minor traffic delays and red

This project is proudly funded by the Australian Government through the Reef Trust Funding Arrangements and delivered in partnership with Townsville City Council.
